Such a wide array of mathematical concepts are covered, making it seem impossible to digest them all. That is why committing a substantial amount of time to them is key. In fact, the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE may be the most time-consuming in terms of studying. But dont freak out just yet not all of these problems are going to be foreign to you. In fact, youre likely to remember a lot of them, or at least recall the processes relatively quickly. This is because the math on this exam represents a very lengthy time span in the your academic history. The reality is often just short of that and made worse if the boss is making demands of you that are unrealistic. When the boss is expecting something from you which is out of alignment to either your skills, work load or job scope; you have a problem. It can be a recipe for failure. It can turn the dream into a nightmare of getting fired or working until after midnight. Either way, this is not in your best interest to let it be a chronic occurrence. Lets look at this issue from both an offensive (prevention) and defensive (mitigation) perspective. 1. Job expectations â€" Any time you get a new job or assigned a new job, you need to ensure you and the boss have documented not only the scope of your work but your performance expectations. You need to understand how you will be measured and what results are expected. From that point, you need to seek feedback on how you are doing to those expectations. This is your career; you need to be responsible for this most vital element. By setting performance expectations right up front, you can mitigate problems in the future. 2. Provide updates  â€" Don’t expect the boss to go out of their way to discover how well your work is going. They will have some exposure to it but not all and not enough. You need to fill in the gaps without drowning them in too much detail. Also, look at your ongoing communication as a way of training your boss on understanding your job. They will have a better appreciation for demands they may make of you if they know the flow of the work to and from you. 3. Proactively raise flags  â€" At the first sign of a problem of delivering to the expectations of your job, you need to let the boss know. It’s not enough to simply tell them of a potential problem, you need to let them know what you are doing to reduce or eliminate the issue. You need to engage them in the solutions, as they will have access to more resources for solutions. The flag raising may actually need to occur when they assign you a project. If you think you can’t deliver to their expectations, for any reason, you need to let them know immediately. Again, you should offer up both the problem you see and solutions. It could be as simple as a different due date or delaying the work of something else. By engaging in a professional discussion at the time of a project assignment, you demonstrate a willingness to work with the boss for a positive outcome. Waiting to inform them about issues, especially any that you knew of to start with, will cause them to lose trust in you. 4. Seek guidance  â€" If the boss doesn’t agree with your assessment that their expectations of you should present a problem, you need an objective opinion. You may be inadvertently misinterpreting the direction the boss has given. Perhaps you don’t fully grasp the direction or the extent of the work involved in a given task. Don’t seek out your work BFF, as they may not have the perspective or experience unless you know they understand your work and have a good working history with the boss. You need to seek counsel with someone that can help you to see the task in a new way, or to help refine the direction the boss has given. You might discover a better way of doing your work. 5. Renegotiate a new wayâ€" If you are barely treading water, get through the crisis and go back to the boss to negotiate a different situation for the future. An example: If they make last minute demands, see if you can get agreement on a longer lead time. If they can’t, then get agreement on lower priority items you can delay without reviewing each time. In other words, be the mature professional and solve the problem with the only person you can solve it with. You were hired to solve problems and this is just one of many. Managing the expectations of your boss is something you should do with each and every boss you will have. By being proactive with your approach, you will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of demands being made of you that will cause you to fail. Notice I didn’t say you will completely do away with inappropriate expectations but when those to arise, take the approach you are solving a problem. Players take turns asking “Do you have any _____?” to complete books of the same rank. The player with the most books at the end of the game is the winner. This serious game promotes accurate pronunciation of plurals, questions with do-fronting, short-answer negation with don’t, and positive affect. Reading the rules of Go Fish is a great reading comprehension activity because it leads to action, not just knowledge. Anyway, learning the game will provide you with an enjoyable social activity for future encounters with English speaking peers outside of the classroom. The target structures are on the back of the card The card back remind students of the question form:  Do you have any?   They also list the target structures for affirmative and negative short answers:  Yes, I do. Here you are. No, I dont. Go fish! How to Play the Go Fish Card Game Three or more players sit in a circle. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals six cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in the middle. Players should pick up their cards and keep them secret from the other players. The player to the dealer’s left starts. A turn consists of asking a specific player for a specific card. That player will either give me the card or tell me, “No, I don’t. Go Fish.” For example, if I am sitting to the left of the dealer, I go first. Imagine that among the cards in my hand, I am holding at least one six, I can turn to another player and say: “Mark, Do you have any sixes?” It is essential that I ask the question using the player’s name. Otherwise, there might be some confusion. If, let’s say, Mark has a six, he must give it to me. If he has two sixes, he must give them both to me. If he has three sixes, he must give all three sixes to me. With my original six, I would then have four sixes. I have made a book of sixes. I must display books face-up in front of me. But let’s say that Mark has only one six. He will give it to me. My turn continues. I can ask another player for the same or another card in my hand. Equally, I can ask Mark for another card in my hand. My turn ends when I ask someone for a card they do not have. To which he or she will respond, “No, I don’t. Go fish.” I finish my turn by taking a card from the pond, the pile in the center of the circle of players. If, however, I pull out the card I was asking for, I have “fished my wish” and my turn continues. (To be fair, I should show everyone the fished wish, otherwise they might doubt that I am telling the truth.) If it is another cardâ€"different from the card I asked for, my turn is over and the player to the left gets a turn. For example, let’s say I ask Mark for sixes, he gives me two. I turn to Christine and ask her if she has any sixes but she replies “No, I don’t. Go fish.” I then pull a card from the pond. It is a jack. I have not fished my wish. It is now Mark’s turn because he is sitting to my left. Christine will go after Mark because she is sitting to his left. The goal of the game is to collect and display the most books. The game continues until all of the cards in the middle have been fished and every player has exhausted all of his or her cards by giving them away or forming books. Sometimes a player will be asked for cards and find himself giving away his last card. There are two ways to handle this situation. The easy rule is to let the player immediately fish for a card in the pile. This keeps him in the game. The hard rule requires the player to wait for his turn to fish for a card. It is called the hard rule because that player’s turn comes to end by fishing. Players should conduct a majority vote to decide which rule to use for the duration of the game. Any student learning a second language as an older child or adult will be using their brain at a more intensive level and putting their memory and comprehension skills to the test. Additionally, students who are, or will be, taking classes in English will also have to learn about English language jargon and be able to read information buried within an academic text. Once ESL students can master their speaking and listening skills, they are more likely to be able to move on to the next level of fluency. Learning a second language can become tedious early on, but there are a few ways students can work through this repetition to reach their goals. 1. Pick an everyday topic or situation Most ESL students will be working with a classroom teacher or private Irvine ESL tutor. They should sign up for a speaking or situational class where they can learn about how to deal with everyday topics. Additionally, students can have a speaking companion to help them refine situations specific to their needs and lifestyle. For instance, one session may cover how to order at the students favorite cafe and the next might include how to make a friend at the local gym. Being able to chat about day to day topics makes life easier and more social. 2. Word of the day English language students are also encouraged to pick a word of the day. They can choose from possible words that help them communicate with their peers, unique terms that will help them broaden their vocabulary or a word list selected by their tutor. Some ESL students will try to memorize 10 or more words every day but often become overwhelmed and end up forgetting all of them. However, learning just one single word per day is usually pretty easy to do. Students should practice using these words as part of their session or with their speaking companion to practice appropriate grammar and verb conjugation (READ: ESL Study Tips for Taking the SAT). 3. Get a beach read Academic text can become dry and overwhelming very quickly. However, easy to read novels and magazines AKA ‘beach reads’ can be fun and informative on a practical level. Students who read a 200-word magazine article on a topic they enjoy or work through a chapter book with simple dialogue will be able to work on reading comprehension at a reasonable level until they become comfortable with more complicated passages. 4. Watch episodes of a comedy or drama with limited dialogue Watching TV in a second language can also be a fun way to reinforce listening skills. Although sentences will be simplified and repeated when necessary during a tutoring session or in a classroom, ESL students will need to become comfortable with faster interactive dialogue before they can converse easily with native English speakers. Most situational comedies and some dramas will provide limited yet practical dialogue that can allow the student to comprehend a fair portion of the material in a visual format (READ: Tips From an Irvine Academic Tutor: 5 Apps for ESL Students). 5. Work with a speaking partner on a regular basis ESL students are also encouraged to work with a speaking partner regularly. Although even one hour once a week can be helpful, students who wish to become comfortable with their fluency are encouraged to work with their group several times a week. If students can’t meet with their tutor that often, they can work with their peers who are also learning English or with a native English speaking partner. The more a student can vary their vocabulary and become comfortable making mistakes- and correcting them -in a small group environment, the more likely they are to get fluent within a reasonable period.
